Kde želvu získat
Prodejny domácích zvířat:
Želvy, které jsou zde nabízeny, si můžete koupit bez jakýchkoli pochybností. Pokud se jedná o chráněný druh musí vám být při nákupu předán registrační list. Opatrní musíte být ovšem tehdy, jedná-li se o druh nechráněný. Nenakupujte spontánně. Nechte si nejprve sdělit zoologický název želvy a před zakoupením se informujte o podmínkách péče.
Chovatelé:
Také zde najdete chráněné druhy želv s registrací, které můžete bez obav koupit. Chovatelé inzerují nejčastěji v teraristických a akvaristických časopisech a také v „oběžnících“ ČSHT. Zjistěte si, nejlépe při osobní návštěvě, jak chovatel svá zvířata drží, kde „bydlí“ a jak vypadá místo jejich zimního spánku. Nechte si od chovatele také ukázat rodiče zvířete.
Upozornění: nenajdete-li želvu, kterou byste chtěli, v prodejně domácích zvířat, můžete si ji případně „zamluvit“ u chovatele. Než vám ji pak dodá, budete mít čas, zařídit pro ni příbytek a důkladně se seznámit s potřebami své budoucí svěřenky.
Vhodný termín pro nákup
Želvu si kupte raději v letních měsících. Určitě ne dřív než v květnu a ne později než v září.
U těch druhů želv, které se ukládají k zimnímu spánku, je pořízení želvy na podzim spojeno s velkým rizikem. Laik v takovém případě často nedokáže odhadnout, jestli se jeho apatická želva jen připravuje k zimnímu spánku, nebo je-li nemocná. Pokud koupíte nemocné zvíře a uložíte ho k přezimování, sotva se následujícího jara dočká živé.
Také byste neměli kupovat želvu ze zimního spánku právě procitlou. Pokud totiž byla uložena k přezimování s nějakou lehkou zdravotní poruchou, může se tato porucha projevit jak náleží teprve v následujících čtyřech až osmi týdnech po probuzení.
Druhy z tropických oblastí:
Zimní spánek nepotřebují. Při kupování takovýchto želv ale nezapomeňte na to, že jsou velice citlivé na průvan. Tropické druhy se musí v zimě dopravovat bezpodmínečně v teple a bezpečí.
